When I'm flying, I love to have the window seat because I can get lost just gazing out the window. As I was flying to San Francisco yesterday, I noticed all the clouds we were flying above. These particular clouds looked like small pillows from where we were. In that moment I was amazed because, when we are looking up from ground level, the clouds look so huge; but when we are in the air, those same clouds look so small. The view of the clouds from different vantage points can be seen as our perspective about problems in comparison to God’s perspective. When we are in the midst of it all and focusing on the problem, it looks so big; but God sees all and above our problems. What looks big to us is minute to God. God sees the whole picture from His view, while we are just focused on one scene. It’s above us now. This was a popular phrase from one of the Exonerated Five in Ava DuVernay’s “When They See Us.” This is a powerful statement because whatever we are facing is truly above us and in God’s hands, if we choose to release it to Him. Drake said it best, “These days I’m letting God handle all things above me!”
I have a conference in San Francisco, CA and my aunt accompanied me on the trip. She required wheelchair assistance to maneuver around the airports. As her transporter escorted us to the plane, she told us our seats were changed to move us closer to the front. We told her okay and didn’t think anything of it. Our seats were originally 18D and 18E, so we figured they moved us up a few seats. We arrived at our new seats, 10B and 10C. As we sat down, we started looking around and I noticed these were the Delta Comfort+ seats. Let me give you some information before we proceed. There are various flight classes with Delta Airlines that range from First Class to Basic Economy, with prices increasing with each class. So, we get situated in the seats and I told my aunt they upgraded us from our Main Cabin seats to Comfort+ seats. We begin to notice the difference with the spacing, padded seatbelts, padded seat pillow, and way more leg room. We were like ok, this is cool, because this was a 5 hour flight. We also received a variety of snacks (more than the usual pretzels or infamous Biscoff cookies you normally receive), and we could get as many as we wanted. Our particular seats were also directly behind First Class, so we could see all the amenities they received with their seats. You don’t hear me. We were going on the plane as planned and we were moved so we could be closer to the front. Our seats were upgraded and we were placed right behind the highest level on a plane.
Ok, so you’re thinking it was just a move so my aunt could get off the plane sooner since she had wheelchair assistance. Perhaps, but may I present this to you? I had a trip last month with wheelchair assistance and I was in my same seat, which was actually on the LAST row of the plane. My last flight, I was in the back, right next to the bathroom (I mean if you looked to the right, there was the bathroom). This flight I’m in a Comfort+ seat, behind First Class. Some may say, but you weren't in First Class, but look at where I was compared to where I was on the last flight. I may not have been in First Class, but I sure was in the neighborhood. May I also drop this in your soul? We can be in the very back, absolutely last, in a situation that isn’t the most pleasant, but God! God can upgrade your situation just like that. You may not be all the way in the front...yet, but He will show you what’s coming by giving you a view of the next upgrade!!! So, was it just a move to accommodate my aunt? No, it was that and more. It was confirmation that God is doing some behind the scenes action to upgrade my situation. I won’t see it coming, but today it was confirmed that greater is coming, and I’m headed to First Class!!! If you’re reading this, this is confirmation for your situation as well. Get ready!
Do stars still shine during the day?
I often get lost in my thoughts, which was the case about 1:00 a.m. this morning. For some reason, the question above came to mind so I decided to look it up. Little did I know this question would lead to a great epiphany.
I started my search for an answer and discovered that stars are actually still in the sky during the day. We can’t see them because the sun is so bright. Matter of fact, the sun is the one star that we can see. The sun is so bright that it overpowers the shine of the other stars; BUT they are still there shining. When the earth rotates and we are facing away from the sun; the sky becomes dark and we are able to see the shining stars that were there all along!
That’s when I had that “aha” moment. We all have star power, but timing is everything. There will be moments when it will be someone else’s time to shine, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t shining too. Our light may not be as bright at that moment, but we still give off light. Just like the stars in the sky, we have to be patient and wait for our time to shine brightly. Remember I said that the earth rotates, creating the space for the other stars to be visible. If that’s the case for the stars in the sky, don’t you think the same opportunity applies to us as well? YES it does. The time will come when there will be a shift and the light you’ve been giving off will be visible. Keep doing what you’ve been doing in the background and wait for the shift. Be patient because your time to shine is coming!!!
It's 9:00 a.m. and I'm loading my car to head to a dental appointment. I wanted to leave my house by that time so I could get to my appointment early. It wasn't until 10:00 a.m., but I figured if I got there early, I could get done early and get to work by noon. I had prepared everything the night before and gotten up early, even worked in some morning cardio of boxing and jump ropes, so I was confident that I would be able to leave on time. I press the button on the wall to open the garage and it raises a little, then closes back down. "Hmm, that's strange" is what I was saying to myself. I press it again and it does the same thing; so I figured I would try the garage remote to see if I would get different results. I press the button on the remote and the exact same thing happened. At this point, I'm getting frustrated, so I walk outside and try to see what may be going on. I come back inside and pull the red string to manually release the garage, then I try to manually lift the garage. NOTHING. I go back outside and try to lift the garage. NOTHING. I'm definitely frustrated now because it's 9:30 a.m. and I had a dental appointment at 10:00 a.m. I finally decide to call for help after trying it my way several times.
It was clear, that I needed to reschedule my appointment and get assistance if I planned on getting out of my garage. I sucked up my pride and called the landlord to come assist me. Once he arrived he assessed the situation and asked a few questions. He looked at the garage and attempted to get it to raise, but he wasn't having any luck either. He was able to discover the cause of it being stuck, but wasn't able to raise the garage. He made a few attempts before he realized that he would need assistance as well; so he called the maintenance man to come help him lift the garage door. Even though he knew what to do, this task was too heavy for him as well. Once the maintenance man arrived, they were able to lift the heavy door TOGETHER and I was able to continue on with my day.
Why the backstory Daws? Well, this story has many similarities to our healthy living journeys. Take a moment and think about where you were in your life when you first started on your journey, or where you are now as you prepare to begin your journey. Like myself, many of us become stuck in a rut. We have tried so many different ways to lose weight, to only become more frustrated when we didn't get the results we were looking for. Many of us continued trying on our own, but the reality is, you need support on this journey. I always say, you have to do this for YOU, but it does help to have a support system in place. No one reaches success alone, as much as people like to think they are solely responsible for their success. If they are truly honest with themselves, they will admit they had help along the way. I like the quote by Simon Sinek, founder of Sinek Partners, "Success always takes help. Failure is done alone." This statement is so powerful and encapsulates everything aforementioned.
We all need help at some point in our lives just as I needed help with the garage door, as well as the landlord. Reclaiming your life and becoming the boss of your health can be a heavy load to lift alone. This blog was created to serve as that support system for people who need help lifting the load and feel stuck in their journey. You could be stuck in getting started, stuck at a plateau, or stuck on what to do next. No matter where you are in your healthy living journey, I am here to help and support you along the way, as I welcome your help and support as well. TOGETHER we can do this and I look forward to our travels together. See you soon and remember, you're the boss of your health!
